Living with Autism: FEAT Offers Support for Families with Autistic Children

Resources

Families for Effective Autism Treatment (FEAT) is a non-profit organization of parents and professionals, designed to help families with children diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). FEAT offers a variety of family support meetings (in English and Spanish) where families can meet each other and discuss issues surrounding autism and treatment options. FEAT’s Board of Directors meets monthly to discuss issues, establish priorities, and vote on the direction of the organization. The staff at FEAT is available to discuss individual children’s issues. FEAT also offers an up to date lending library and brochures and information on service providers from around the community. Additionally, FEAT has a parent hotline that is answered daily as well as a website for parents and professionals seeking more information. FEAT publishes a monthly electronic newsletter offering information on activities for families with autistic children in Southern Nevada.

Medical/Legislative

FEAT closely follows research and medical breakthroughs that will impact children affected by autism. In addition, FEAT tracks changes in national and local policies and laws that may affect autism. FEAT conducts seminars and trainings annually in order to provide families a source of qualified individuals to work with their children.

Advocacy Program

FEAT recently began an advocacy program. This program offers parents the opportunity to take a knowledgeable advocate to their child’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings with the school district free of charge.
Family Outings

FEAT also conducts family outings such as picnics, pool parties and family nights at” Pump It Up” where families can hang out, network, and enjoy themselves worry free. FEAT relies on community partnerships to help support its programming. It is a priority of FEAT to provide families the most current and appropriate information on services and community programs for their child.
