McDonald’s® Sponsors Back to School Supply Drive

McDonald’s is teaming up with FOX5, the Salvation Army, and NV Energy in order to collect school supplies for local Clark County students. The drive began on Monday July 30th and will continue until Sunday, August 12th. People can drop off supplies at any participating neighborhood McDonald’s location.

“No child should be without school supplies… while you’re out shopping for school supplies for your own child, why not pick up an extra item for someone in need?”

“No child should be without school supplies,” says Thomas Arlt, President of the local McDonald’s Owner/Operator Association. “With all of the budget cuts teachers have gone through, and with the economy still down, this is something that we can all do to help. While you’re out shopping for school supplies for your own child, why not pick up an extra item for someone in need?”

Last year this drive collected enough school supplies to stuff 1,000 backpacks. This year they have set the goal to double what they collected last year. The Salvation Army will stuff and deliver backpacks to local, in need Elementary, Middle and High Schools on August 20th through

August 24th. Items needed include colored pencils, crayons, erasers, folders, glue sticks, hand sanitizer, and much more. For a full list of supplies please visit ClarkCoSchools.org .

New Doctor Joins Women’s Cancer Center

The Women’s Cancer Center of Nevada is expanding its team of physicians with the addition of Gynecologic Oncologist, Aimee C. Fleury, MD, MPH.

The decision to join The Women’s Cancer Center of Nevada came after Dr. Fleury worked with the staff during her training and residency. She says she was inspired by the level of care and expertise offered at the facility.

Dr. Fleury has been involved in several professional and academic societies throughout her career. Among her activities, she is a Fellow-in-Training in the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists and a HERA Foundation OSB1 Grant Award Recipient for 2011-2012.

Dr. Fleury’s received a medical degree at the University Of Nevada School Of Medicine in 2005 and a Masters of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University, Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2010.

About Women’s Cancer Center

The Women’s Cancer Center of Nevada specializes exclusively in gynecologic cancers, including ovarian, cervical and uterine cancer. As a full member in the Gynecologic Oncology Group, Women’s Cancer Center offers both standard approaches and clinical trials for those who qualify. Women’s Cancer Center surgeons are pioneers in the research and use of laparoscopic techniques, which, though less invasive, can be as effective as more widely used surgical procedures for treating women with gynecologic cancers. Women’s Cancer Center is one of only a handful of major institutions in the country to study this approach.

Role Model Parents

By Icia Reid-Sandulak)

Your children model your behaviors in many ways. Whatever you do, your children are watching. You know the old saying “do as I say, but not as I do”. As parents you know that this is not a realistic goal for your children. Your children are more likely to do as you do, since you are the first and most important teacher in their life. You want your children to model your good behaviors, and only the good ones, right? Your children look up to you as their parent, their guide, their hero, and their mentor. If you around fighting with your neighbors , friends, and family, or ignoring rules, or even giving your middle finger to those who offend you, that is behavior your children will see as appropriate when they are interacting with their peers. Your children are watching when you think they are not!

On the bright side, you can take comfort in knowing that you are teaching positive behaviors. Don’t forget that you serve as role models not only through direct interaction with your children, but also though example shown with your attitude and behavior when you interact with others. There are no perfect parents; therefore, as parents you will have shortcomings in your parenting roles. It is up to you to take personal time out when necessary, to avoid negative interaction. Your children will admire this behavior. It is okay to make mistakes as long as you do not keep making the same mistakes. Your children are like sponges, they will soak up all the good behaviors and the bad behaviors too. Be sure to set more good examples. It will be healthier for you and your children. Don’t forget, you are the most important person in your children’s lives.

Icia Reid-Sandulak , has been working with children for the last 20 years. She has a background in Social Work and is the mother of four children, one son and three daughters. Presently, she is the director of Apple Grove Foster Care Agency and invites anyone who aspires to be a foster parent to contact the office for information.
