Saddle Up for Camp Camelot

What are your kids doing this summer to beat the desert heat? Did you know that one of Nevada’s best-kept secrets is nestled away in the mountains just out side of Pioche Nevada? We are talking about the Amazon Ranch, home of Camp Camelot. Located in beautiful Lincoln County Nevada, home of Nevada’s best state parks, the adventures are endless!

Camp Camelot is Nevada’s Premier Resident Equestrian Summer Camp for Children and perfect Family Vacation since 2004! Camp Camelot offers an exclusive riding program in a pristine location at over 6,000 ft elevation. The Amazon Ranch is a piece of history surrounded by the Delmue Ranch, owned and operated by the Delmue family for over 150 years! What a great destination to get out of the soaring temperatures of the desert and enjoy the cool mountain air. A stay at the Amazon Ranch is a step back in time, a wildlife extravaganza and pure rest and relaxation! And the best part… Transportation to and from Las Vegas and surrounding areas is provided so you can sit back and enjoy your road tour through Lincoln County on the way to the Ranch!

At Camp Camelot, Children 8-16 experience a taste of horsemanship throughout history. Classes are limited to only 10 children per week, with one and two week sessions available. We offer both English and Western sessions throughout the season. Children booking two-week sessions get to participate in both English and Western riding disciplines. “Our focus is safety and fun in horsemanship,” says Camp Director and C.E.O. Tara Clark. Each student is assigned to a horse for the week and is with that horse 3-4 hours daily. This gives the rider an opportunity to learn what it takes to own a horse of their very own. Children learn horse management by proper feeding, grooming, ground handling, and safety from the ground up. Children saddle up and ride their very own horse each day. Camp Camelot kids participate in an oral lesson on a different subject matter daily. Kids play games and do obstacle work on horseback to promote skills. Beginners to advance grow at their own pace progressing from the arena work to trail rides, use of a cross country jump course, polo in our stick and ball field or barrel racing and more. At the end of each week, campers celebrate with a graduation horse show for Ribbons and Trophy’s.

Guest accommodations include camping in Giant Indian Tipis and period tents and showering under the stars in our outdoor shower units. Campers enjoy delicious Dutch oven dinners nightly. All meals are made with fresh healthy ingredients and may even have items picked from our very own gardens! Breakfast is a fabulous buffet where Eggs, meats, fruits; juices and breads are varied daily. Lunches vary daily and fresh fruit and snacks are always available throughout the day.

Camp Camelot offers a two to one councilor to camper ratio. All Camp Camelot Councilors are first aid and CPR certified. Afternoon activities change daily with shopping and a Museum Tour to the historic town of Pioche Nevada on Mondays, Fishing on Tuesdays and our horse show Saturday mornings a standard. At the ranch we have Tether Ball, Volley Ball, Badminton, Basket Ball and large lounging mats if you just want to hang out with your friends or quietly read a book!

The Amazon Ranch is hosting an open house on Saturday May 21 from 11 am- 7 pm with demonstrations from students, a Dutch Oven Luncheon, and a Wine and Cheese tasting in the evening! We will be hosting “producers location tours” throughout the day by reservation only. We hope you will stop by and join us! To learn more on our open house, please visit our CC website listed below.

Camp Solari Helps Grieving Children

While losing a loved one is never easy, it can be particularly difficult for children who have lost parents or siblings.

That’s why Solari Hospice Foundation established Camp Solari, a weekend-long bereavement camp for children and their surviving guardian(s). This year, Solari Hospice Foundation is proud to partner with Las Vegas-based Clear View Counseling, who will be orchestrating and leading all camp activities. The camp’s mission is to teach children and teens, ages 6 to 18, healthy ways to work through their grief, meet others who have experienced similar losses, and continue life as positively as possible while honoring their lost loved ones.

The next Camp Solari will be held from May 18-20, 2012, at Mt. Charleston Lodge, located at the end of Highway 157 and about a 35-minute drive from the Las Vegas Strip. Applications will be accepted through March 30, 2012. All weekend activities – including lodging, meals and materials – are free to camp participants. Solari Hospice Foundation covers these costs through fundraisers and charitable donations.

“Just to be at a camp in the mountains – in a world outside of Las Vegas and surrounded by nature – is therapeutic and calming.”

“Children who lose close family members during the formative years of their life often have a tough time working through their grief,” says Candis Armour, R.N., executive director, Solari Hospice Care. “Camp Solari provides a unique camaraderie and bonding experience in a positive, uplifting atmosphere. Children and families realize that they aren’t alone, but that there are others struggling with exactly the same issues.”

Debora Jette, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and president and owner, Clear View Counseling, notes that children can sometimes think they are the only ones who have lost a close family member, and so they feel isolated and “different.”

“Children need to know that it’s okay to ask for help,” says Jette. “It’s important that they can talk to others about their grief without feeling judged or like something is wrong with them. It’s also important that they feel comfortable releasing their emotions instead of bottling them up inside. Our goal is to provide techniques and exercises that help children and families explore their feelings and thoughts, and to do so in a fun, relaxing atmosphere.”

Among the many planned activities are art, music, talk therapy, drumming, dancing and nature walks.

“Just to be at a camp in the mountains – in a world outside of Las Vegas and surrounded by nature – is therapeutic and calming,” says Jette. “Clear View Counseling is proud to be a partner with Solari Hospice Foundation to offer this fun, exciting weekend camp, and to help these children and their families gain the coping skills they need to create happy, healthy lives.”

Camp Solari is the brainchild of Solari Hospice Foundation Founder Gary W. Polsky, who launched his first bereavement camp for children and their families in Arizona in 1999. Currently, Solari Hospice Foundation operates camps in Las Vegas and Houston. Polsky would like to increase the number of camp locations in the future.

“It has always been my goal to help eliminate potential dysfunction in these children so they can move forward in their lives with joy, zeal and enthusiasm,” he says. “I’d love to see this program expand and help even more children.”

Attendees are chosen based on need and prioritized on a first-come, first-served basis. To request an application, please call (702) 870-0000. To learn about the camp, or to donate to the Solari Hospice Foundation, visit www.SolariHospice.com and click on the link for Camp Solari. Say You’re Sorry

By Lexy Capp

“I’m sorry.”

For a lot of people these are the two hardest words to recite in any language. Even if what happened was an accident or something happened that you didn’t mean to do, you would most likely still feel sorry if you knew the other person’s feelings were hurt. After apologizing, you may feel better and the other person probably will as well. However, everyone we have ever met in our life, whether they’ll admit to it or not, has hurt someone at some point during their existence in this world.

Even though we may not always feel compelled to do so, sometimes saying you’re sorry is the best way to resolve and bring closure to any situation no matter how mild or intense it may be. Saying your sorry is the first step towards forgiveness and one of the most important steps for maintaining a strong and trusting relationship with anyone. For parents, it is especially important to say sorry to your children if you are ever in the wrong. Children learn from our behavior on a daily basis and it is our duty to steer them towards making wise decisions, especially if it means saying you’re sorry when you need to.

Saying your sorry is the first step towards forgiveness and one of the most important steps for maintaining a strong and trusting relationship with anyone.

As most parents will agree, raising children is one of the hardest jobs on the planet and there will always come a time when our young ones feel upset because of something we did. Regardless of whether or not you’ll be immediately forgiven, saying sorry is important for parents too, as it is the cornerstone of communication in any relationship. One of the most effective tools of knowing when to say sorry is listening. After all, we can’t fully understand how much we have upset our children, unless we let them convey their feelings. Listening intently is the beginning step to forming an appropriate apology. As parents we lead by example and by showing our children that we are strong enough to admit our mistakes; we are educating them on the importance of making amends.

“I’m sorry.” Even though these two words can have a profound impact on any relationship dynamic, it is important for us as parents to tell our children that saying “I’m sorry” should always include some kind of corrective action and just because the slate is wiped clean we must learn from our mistakes and build trust together. Parents and children should always share a mutual trust and by apologizing when it is necessary, we are telling our children that when faced with a similar situation in the future we are committed to acting differently.

Next time you think about how to resolve a situation, take a step back and ask yourself “Should I say sorry?” After all, even grown-ups make mistakes. By apologizing when we’re wrong, grown-ups can set a good example and show kids how to do the right thing and apologize when they need to.
