The Daily News is an American newspaper published in New York City. It was founded in 1919 as the Illustrated Daily News by Joseph Medill Patterson and is a subsidiary of the Tribune Company. It is the oldest and largest tabloid newspaper in the United States, with a circulation of over 2.4 million copies per day as of 2019.
It was founded as a right-wing Republican paper, but over the years it has become more moderate and has strayed from its conservative roots. As a result, it is often described as “flexibly centrist.” The Daily News has an extensive political section that covers candidates and ballot measures.
Originally founded as a newspaper for a small town in northern New Jersey, the Daily News was renamed in 1928 and moved to Manhattan West. It remained at the site until 1995. In that year, the paper moved to 450 West 33rd Street. It still maintains local bureaus in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan.
The News has a long history of providing the most sensational news and entertainment content in the city. Its early articles included large and prominent photographs, lurid depictions of crime and scandal, and cartoons. It also had extensive celebrity gossip and classified ads.
The News is currently owned by New York News, Inc. (which is part of the Chicago-based company Tronc) and has been run by a management team led by businessman Mortimer B. Zuckerman. It was once a rival newspaper to the New York Post, but has since fallen behind.
