Entertaiment is a broad idea that encompasses activities of any sort, but usually is associated with amusement or pleasure. It can range from something as simple as watching television; to a private party, whether small or large; to a performance for thousands; to a political event or act of violence. The word has a long history, but it continues to evolve and adapt to the needs of individuals and groups. The etymology of entertainment is instructive: it derives from the Latin intertenere, or “to hold inside.” This suggests that the experience of being entertained often has a deeper significance than simply amusement.
