The word is probably a late Latin compound of inter- and tenere, with the Indo-European root ten; see entertain.
Entertaiment is a complex topic because what is entertaining for one person may not be for another. It is also an area with a great deal of overlap across different mediums and has demonstrated an almost unlimited potential for creative remix. It is thought that this occurs because entertainment often hits on the kinds of things that the human brain was evolved to deeply react to in order to understand the world around it.
